A small village located 40 km far away from Fundão and 60 km from Castelo Branco, Janeiro de Cima is placed in a valley of Zêzere river, between mountains and pin-woods. The village as been always marked by its proximity to the river: the houses were built with pebbles from its bottom, the fertile lands sometimes flooded by its waters have raised singular cultures, with highlights to the linen.
The river-side is still the habitat for numerous animal species like the otters and eagles. It still remains some land fields and traditional economical activities. As well, in what matters to leisure, Zêzere river offers a lot of possibilities.
Janeiro de Cima, along with more 23 villages of Center Region, makes part of the Schist Villages Network.
